How to use an English dictionary effectively?

We often use a dictionary to search for the meaning of a particular word or phrase. But the dictionary provides you more than the meaning of words. Let's see how?

Here are the effective ways of using a dictionary:

  1. Our first task is to choose a standard dictionary like Longman, Webster, Oxford, Collins CoBuild, etc are the few trendy dictionaries considered to be of standard quality.
  2. Read the introduction of the dictionary. It tells us about the arrangement of words in the dictionary.
  3. To get acquainted with acronyms & abbreviations used in the dictionary.
(Abbreviations: Shortened form of words used to represent the whole. Example Dr., Prof.
Acronyms: Contains a set of initials from a phrase that usually forms another word. Example ISRO, UNESCO.)

      4. Find out:
  • The pronunciation of words.
  • The most common meaning of the word.
  • The type of the part of speech of the word.
  • The synonyms of the word.
  • The antonyms of the word.
  • The origin of the word.
  • The phrasal verbs and idioms are associated with the word.
  • The usage of the word in various sentences.
