 How to use an English dictionary effectively?


We often use a dictionary to search for the meaning of a particular word or phrase. But the dictionary provides you more than the meaning of words. Let's see how?

Here are the effective ways of using a dictionary:

  1. Our first task is to choose a standard dictionary like Longman, Webster, Oxford, Collins CoBuild, etc are the few trendy dictionaries considered to be of standard quality.
  2. Read the introduction of the dictionary. It tells us about the arrangement of words in the dictionary.
  3. To get acquainted with acronyms & abbreviations used in the dictionary.
(Abbreviations: Shortened form of words used to represent the whole. Example Dr., Prof.
Acronyms: Contains a set of initials from a phrase that usually forms another word. Example ISRO, UNESCO.)

Highlights of NEP 2020

 

Education is based on four pillars; learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together, and learning to be. 

👉National Education Policy (NEP) 1986:

Formation: Rajiv Gandhi Government.
Chairman: Acharya Ramamurti.
Recognized as: Operation Blackboard.
Modified in: 1992, by P.V.Narasimha Rao.
Later recognized as Common Minimum Programs.
Aim: Removal of disparities and equalize educational opportunity.
Covering age group: 6-14 years.
Structure: 10+2+3.

Highlights of Policy:
  1. Under the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) 10th board and 12th board were prioritized.
  2. Facilitate were made for the education of women, SC, ST, OBC, Minorities, and the handicapped.
  3. Establishment of centres/programs for continuous learning and distance learning.
  4. Common Entrance Test for Professionals, Medical & Engineering.
  5. As per NCERT minimum degree qualification for teachers was 2 years of integrated B.Ed.
  6. Recognizing ECCE and establishing balwadi, Daycare centres, etc.
  7. Adult education Program.
  8. Facilitate technical and Vocational education.
  9. De-linking degrees from jobs in some areas.
  10. Mid-day meal program.

Formation: PM Narendra Modi's government.
Chairman: Dr k.Kasturirangan.
Aim: Achieving the global standard of Education.
Covering age group: 3-18 years.
Structure: 5+3+3+4.

Highlights:
General:
  • MHRD is now renamed as Ministry of Education.
  • GDP investment in Education to increase from 1.6% to 6%.
  • The gross enrollment ratio to increase by 50% in 2035.
Schools:
  • Pre-School will be part of the Formal Education System.
  • A 360-degree holistic progress card will be prepared.
  • Common Standards of Learning in public & private schools.
  • Students to learn coding from class6.
  • Mother tongue to be the medium of instruction till 5th grade.
  • Schools will have 10 bagless days for informal internships.
Higher Education:
  • Holistic and Multidisciplinary Education - Flexity of Subjects.
  • Higher Education Commission of India HECI will be a single regulatory board for higher education excluding Medical & legal Education.
  • Sanskrit and other classical languages will be offered at all levels of education.
  • Availability of Academic Bank of Credit for students to reinstate.
  • National Research Foundation will be established for fostering a research culture.
Professionals:
  • Establishment of Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERU) for IIT & IIM.
  • M.Phil will be discontinued.
  • As per the national testing agency common entrance test will be conducted twice a year.
  • Bachelor's degree will be of 4 years and will be having multidisciplinary subjects with exit options as follow:
  1. Exit after 1 year: Certificate.
  2. Exit after 2 years: Diploma.
Teaching:
  • As per the new NCFTE2021 minimum qualification for teachers is 4 years of integrated B.Ed.
  • Establishment of National Assessment Centres (PARAKH) for common assessment. 
  • Establishment of the National Educational Technology Forum (NEFT) for digitalization of education.
  • Top 100 universities will be facilitated to operate in India.
